FALL HYDRANT FLUSHING

Newburyport—The Newburyport Department of Public Services, Water Division will begin flushing the city’s water system on Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Beginning in the City’s west end and proceeding east, flushing will take place between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Large mains along High, Merrimac, and Water Streets and the Industrial Park area will be flushed at night from 8:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m starting October 11 – October 12th.

Residents are advised to call the Water Division Business Office for daily work location details.

During this flushing program, residents may experience temporarily discolored water, although measures have been taken to minimize this inconvenience. The following suggestions will help avoid problems with discolored water:

1. Check for discolored water before doing laundry to prevent staining.

2. If you have discolored water, wait 15-minutes and run the cold faucets. This will allow time for the discolored water in the main to pass your house.

3. Avoid using bleach in laundry as this worsens the staining.

4. In the event clothes are stained, there are products available that will remove the stains when re-washing the clothes. The Business Office does have a supply of this product. Do not dry stained laundry.

Water Division Business Office personnel can be reached at 978- 465-4420 for further information or to answer questions about this process.
